Our opus 80 was originally built for the East Millstone Reformed Church in East Millstone, New Jersey, and at that time was the fifth organ the Odells had built for a Reformed Church since the inception of the firm in 1859. A rare letter in our files from William H. Odell in 1967 to the Reverend Dr. Milton J. Hoffman lists the various Odell employees involved in the construction of the organ: "The wind chest was made by Henry Radzinsky. John Fackler was the metal pipe maker and his brother William Fackler the wood pipe maker and case maker. The voicing was done by Thomas Robjohn and his brother William Robjohn. The men who worked on the other actions and parts were Messrs. Stennettt, Soles, Jourdan, Bryant, Sill and Harris." Our firm carried out some minor rebuid work on the organ in 1967 and it remained at the East Millstone Reformed Church until their building was sold to a Baptist congregation in 1978. To preserve one of the earliest examples of our work, our firm repurchased the organ with the hope of eventual restoration and relocation. In the late 1980s, through the efforts of the late Alan Laufman and the Organ Clearing House, the organ was given a new home at the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Manassas, Virgina. The organ was rebuilt and installed by a third party with some minor alterations and remains in service, played every Sunday by organist Francis Elliot. The facade pipes are gilded with 22 carat gold leaf. (click on the photo above to enlarge) |
